AL_A to design UK’s first Fusion Powerplant

A new chapter in clean energy begins at West Burton

March 16 2026

As part of the ILIOS consortium, we have been selected to design the UK Government’s first prototype fusion power plant at West Burton in Nottinghamshire.

Working in partnership with STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production), ILIOS brings together leading expertise across science, engineering, architecture and construction to deliver this ambitious piece of national infrastructure.

Building on our experience of designing the world’s first magnetised target fusion facility at the UK Atomic Research Centre in Culham for General Fusion, we are developing ambitious plans to transform a former coal power station into a vibrant, sustainable, science led community that engages the public and nurtures skills growth, wellbeing and economic prosperity in the region.

Over the last 18 months in collaboration with STEP and ILIOS, we have begun to shape a vision that will create a centre of gravity for the fusion industry at West Burton.

In our vision, the new STEP fusion powerplant and the Trent Valley supercluster will become a thriving centre of science and industry at regional, national and global scale.
